Prasonisi is a small wind haven located at the very far point of the Island of Rhodes. The islet is surrounded by the Aegean Sea and the Mediterranean Sea from both sides that come and meet at the center of the beach. Wind and Waves
The pristine beach combines with the thermal winds from the mountains. If you to that the wind-channel effects between Rhodos and Turkey, the best conditions for windsurfing and kitesurfing are created. The strongest winds are received during August and September. This is why July and August are the busiest months with an onslaught of tourists and surfers coming to take their boards to the water. The thermal winds usually kick in during the afternoons.
The wind statistics for Prasonisi are always promising. They see variations in direction and strength by the months and season. During July and August, the daily wind speeds average at 15 to 30 knots or 4 to 7 Bft – ideal for windsurfing. So it’s the best time to book a hotel room. Windless days are a rarity; Prasonisi only sees two to three of these per month.
During May to June and September to October, the off-season winds are often weak and the windless days become more common, occurring for a week each month.
The wind on Prasonisi blows in the onshore direction on the wave side and offshore on the flatwater side. The wave side forms good conditions for kitesurfers and windsurfers for wave riding.
The height of the waves formed depends upon the wind ranges. In general, the height of waves ranges from 0.5 to 2 meters on good days. The average height is usually slightly less than one meter.
The waves tend to break after covering about 50 to 100 meters when estimated from the beach. Near the shore, a stretch of shallow water of roughly 10 to 30 meters is present, which offers pleasant and gentle waves.
Water
The flat waters offer quality water for a fulfilling surfing experience. On the wave side, hindrances like algae, seaweed, and pollutants like floating plastic can be found because of the heavy load of visitors Prasonisi gets each year.
The water temperatures depend on the thermal winds and, of course, the seasons. During the summer months, starting from May to June, the water can be slightly chilly with a temperature range of 21 to 23 degrees Celcius. July and August are the peak months with the best water condition and temperatures of 25 to 27 degrees. A short summer wetsuit is ideal during this period.
Later on in the year, the water temperature starts to drop. September is still pleasant, with an average temperature of 26 degrees. But, by October, the water becomes a shivering 23 degrees.
The atmospheric or air temperature is determined by the water conditions as Prasoinisi is next to the open seas. The air temperatures are often a few degrees above the water temperatures. The wind plays a significant role in air circulation and the daily weather conditions.
The Sandy Beach
Prasonisi beach is a sight to behold. The sea bed is sandy and clear. With fine quality sand, no stones, and bearable heat, the sands are a dream to walk on. To feel the soft small grains between the toes of feet while taking in the fresh winds makes Prasonisi the best place to be during the summers.
The sand area in front of the dunes is often flat and large. Towards the left of the beach, there is a swimming area with sunbeds and parasols laid out. Several motor homes can be found on the sandbar during the busy seasons. However, camping is not allowed on the beach.
